また、1955年創刊号以来の英字新聞をデータベース化した「The Japan News Digital Archive」についてもご案内します。

Yomidas Rekishikan is a digital archive covering the entire history of newspaper publishing by The Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan’s leading daily. The archive contains more than 15 million articles printed by the newspaper since its first issue in 1874. Yomidas is updated daily, with over 250,000 additions each year, making it the largest among Japanese major newspapers by far.

The database comprises four sections plus an optional feature:
■ The Meiji, Taisho & Showa eras (1874 to 1989)
■ The Heisei & Reiwa eras (from 1986 onward; 250,000 stories added each year)
■ The Japan News, The Yomiuri Shimbun’s English-language daily (since 1989)
■ Contemporary Who’s Who (profiles of 23,000 noteworthy people)
■ Regional Sections (Showa era, 1933 to 2001) optional feature

The Yomiuri Shimbun is delighted to be taking part in this year’s workshop at EAJRS. We will introduce our database’s extensive content, ranging from historical articles dating back to the 19th century to a vast variety of modern-day articles, including those on Japanese pop culture, such as anime, manga, and idol stars. We will introduce the many useful features of current basic Yomidas tutorials and unveil the major renewal of Yomidas planned for 2024.

We also will discuss the Japan News Digital Archive, which includes every issue of the English-language newspaper Yomiuri has published since 1955. Archive users can search and view a wide range of content published in the paper since its first issue. This invaluable resource includes hundreds of thousands of articles about Japan, Asia, and the world.
